Opportunity

As part of a multi-disciplinary, integrated services model, the Youth Employment Specialist will work within the strategic objectives of Pacific Community Resources Society (PCRS). Their primary role is to provide pre-employment support young job seekers, deliver pre-employment and life skills training, coach participants one-on-one and provide outreach support in the community. The Youth Employment Specialist will facilitate group sessions that are designed to promote interactions with peers through topics such as conflict resolution, communications skills, resumes, cover letter writing, interview skills and general life skills. The goal is to support participants with multiple, complex barriers while they gain skills and prepare for transitioning to employment. 


The Youth Employment Specialist will create employer connections for work experience and employment. They will work closely with supervisors and managers of employers to support participants. Additionally, this Role will recruit and market the program in and around the community.  The Youth Employment Specialist position requires a high level of skill as a facilitator, a sound understanding of career development, trauma-informed practice, solid working knowledge of psychological theories such as Transtheoretical Model of Change, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Motivational Interviewing. Experience working with youth with complex barriers such as unstable housing, addictions, and mental health is essential. 

 

This position will require the candidate to support programs in both Surrey and Vancouver locations.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver group session material tailored to participants’ learning styles, employment readiness or specialized needs.
  • Complete case notes and administrative tasks as per contract, keeping track of all outside appointments and follow-ups, track attendance and progress towards participants’ goals.
  • Provide job search support to participants via: online platforms, phone, text, email and one to one meetings that are virtual or in-person.
  • Provide referrals to other community support services as required.
  • Coach and support participants effectively in a way that facilitates independence and self-sufficiency.
  • Tailor and adjust the work experience to meet the individual needs of the participants.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers and staff and participate in team efforts.
  • Collaborate with employers regarding participant progress during their employment.
  • Liaise with community partners, stakeholders, employers and other professionals as required.
  • Promote and market the program to community partners and deliver information sessions.
  • Work effectively with others in an interdisciplinary and diverse environment.
  • Participates in committees, task groups, continuing education and community initiatives as appropriate.
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Related education and experience working with youth in employment
  • Career Development Practitioner Certificate or Equivalent
  • High level of verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills
  • Experience supporting youth with multiple complex barriers such as unstable housing, addiction and mental health.
  • Experience planning and facilitating group sessions to youth with diverse abilities and skills 
  • Criminal Records Check with the Vulnerable Sector.
  • Class 5 Drivers License with business insurance and use of own vehicle (mileage paid)
  • Occupational First Aid – Level 1
  • Excellent computer skills and administrative capability

  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of trauma-informed and culturally safe principles of care.
  • Ability to work effectively with others in an interdisciplinary, multicultural environment, including understanding the frameworks of other disciplines.
  • Knowledge and understanding of resources in the area to ensure effective community referrals
