Opportunity

The Youth Substance Use Facilitator is a member of our larger Chilliwack Addiction and Prevention program (CAPS), as well as being connected with our Prevention and Health Promotion program in Surrey, Delta and Langley school districts. This facilitator’s home office with be at our Hocking St. location in Chilliwack, with the majority of the work happening in the schools four days a week between the hours of 9am and 3:30pm.

The primary role of the Prevention Facilitator is to engage in one-to-one supports, provide meaningful and accurate information about substance use, and promote healthy lifestyle choices and activities. The Facilitator will identify strengths and needs in the school community around the theme of substance use, and work collaboratively with the school to develop goals and strategies that reinforce strengths and resilience. Creating a safe and therapeutic space is a priority for this position.

Responsibilities

• To provide one-to-one supports to youth – including intake, assessment, orientation and development of service goals
• Work within SD33 Middle Schools (AD Rundle and Chilliwack Middle) 5 hours a day/4 days a week
• Act as a positive role model and assist youth in developing values of honesty, self-assertiveness, and respect for others, and a lack of dependency on substances
• To develop, implement, and facilitate and/or co-facilitate group sessions with school staff or other members of the PCRS youth team
• Collaborate with the school and district to provide workshops, large health promotion events and after school programming as determined by community needs
• Participate in and attend working groups, committees, agency and school district meetings
• Maintain administrative duties and follow PCRS policies and procedures

Qualifications

• BSW or BA in a related field plus 1 years’ experience, or Child and Youth Care or relevant discipline plus 2 years direct experience. Substance use or Addiction Counselling training. Combination of experience and education is considered.
• Trauma-informed practice and suicide intervention training
• Criminal record check including the vulnerable sector
• Valid BC driver’s license and the reliable use of a personal vehicle; Mileage & business use insurance paid. Drivers abstract will be required.
• Experience working in alcohol and substance use prevention or intervention
• Ability to form strong therapeutic working relationships with youth
• Solid understanding of the impacts of colonization on our First Nations people
• Sound judgement and effective interpersonal skills
• Clear communication skills, verbal and written
• Ability to create a safe and therapeutic space for youth
