Opportunity
Honour Secondary School (HSS) is an independent school where students benefit from a small class environment and individualized instruction tailored for each learner's specific needs. Of the 30 students that HSS accommodates each year, 15 seats are reserved for youth justice programs. The PCRS HSS teacher will work with school staff and lead our students' academic development and curriculum implementation. Working in collaboration with the principal, the teacher will deliver the curriculum in innovative ways that includes creative community based learning activities for a specialized student population. In collaboration with the HSS program supervisor and principal, the teacher will establish and maintain a safe and nurturing environment for students.
Responsibilities
- Deliver curriculum in innovative ways to a specialized student population;
- Create innovative community-based learning activities for students to bring their learning into the real world;
- Plan, develop and implement offsite learning opportunities for students;
- Ensure all content is culturally appropriate, sensitive, and significant. Consulting with community partners and elders regarding culture and language as necessary;
- Assess student growth through progress monitoring, as appropriate, for assessing academic progress and educational accountability;
- Establish and maintain a safe and nurturing environment for staff and students;
- Maintain proper program records, including report cards.
- Provide program evaluation input, leading inspections, and audits in collaboration with the principal.
- Collaborating on the creation and maintenance of Individual Education Plans.
- Adhere to the Independent School Act.
Qualifications
- VALID BC TEACHING CERTIFICATE OF QUALIFICATION (unrestricted)
- Teaching experience, specifically working with youth aged 13-19
- Ability to teach and support student learning in core subjects for grades 8 to 12
- Awareness of issues surrounding inner-city education and diversity
- Fluency in a second language is an asset
- Experience working with students with learning disabilities, special education teaching is an asset
- Valid BC Driver’s licence, use of personal vehicle is required with paid mileage.
