Emergency Weather Shelter, City Centre Youth Hub

Opportunity

Surrey Youth Housing Services is currently looking for auxiliary on-call staff to provide overnight extreme weather shelter support during the winter.
This position may have the opportunity to work in various youth work settings such as supporting youth in the Resource Room, or other activities in the Youth Hubs and various programs.

Hours will vary, generally requiring overnight shifts between October 2024 and April 2025. Successful applicants will be part of an auxiliary pool. 

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and enforce the shelter rules to ensure the safety and security of all youth.
  • Provide support to the youth accessing the shelter, addressing their immediate needs, and referring to services as appropriate.
  • Assist with any emergency situations, following procedures and protocols. As well as intervene and manage any conflicts or crises. 
  • Facilitate access to resources such as food, clothing, and personal hygiene items.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, incidents, and interactions with youth participants, as well as report concerns.
  • Communicate effectively with other staff.
  • Assist with shelter setup and teardown, ensuring that the space is clean, organized, and ready for use.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • B.A. or a degree in a related field, a community service support worker (CSSW) diploma or child and youth care counsellor (CYCC) diploma plus two years experience. Extensive relevant at-risk youth experience and/or a combination of relevant life experience will be considered.
  • Problem solving and crisis intervention skills
  • Criminal record check including the vulnerable sector
  • Standard First-Aid & CPR certificate
  • Valid B.C. driver’s license
  • Regular access to an insured personal vehicle is required
  • Driver’s abstract must be submitted
